Established in 1956, Shanghai University of Traditional
Chinese Medicine (SHUTCM) is one of the four earliest colleges of traditional
Chinese medicine in China. The university has taken a leading position
in the
colleges of traditional Chinese medicine in China, with the integration of
education, medicine and scientific research, complete disciplines and majors and
high-quality faculty. The university was established with 16 subsidiary colleges
and departments, 4 affiliated hospitals, 13 affiliated or cooperative research
institutes, 8 research centers, the earliest museum of medical history in China
and a library with a collection of over 50,000 books. In 1999, the university
passed the evaluation of "National Excellent College of Undergraduate
Education", becoming the only university of traditional Chinese medicine honored
with this reputation in China.
Supported by the educational resources in Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, International Education College is the higher education institution that was established particularly for overseas students at the university. In the past 30 years since its establishment, this college has trained nearly 6,000 TCM doctors, acupuncturists and physical therapists from almost 100 countries and regions in the world. This institution was the first college of Traditional Chinese medicine in China to provide educational services to overseas students under international standards such as ISO9001:2000 Quality Management System. At present, there are 440 degree-course students and over 1,000 short-term course students enrolling yearly in the College. This college is also established as an International Acupuncture Training Center under the World Health Organization (WHO); providing multiple language services in educational and exchanging activities including English, Japanese, French and Korean languages.
Honso's Dan Wen visited the University in May of 2007
and met with Ms. Ying Lijun, the Associate Dean of the
International Education College of SHUTCM and her team at the
International Cooperation Center, one of the main facilities for
international education. Currently, there are over 500 international
students from around the world studying here.

Many streets on the campus are named after ancient
contributors of Chinese Medicine. This street is called "Zhongjing
Avenue" dedicated to Zhang Zhongjing who wrote the famous book Shang
Han Lun
